Toyota stopped accepting orders for the Camry hybrid because it was too popular

In Australia, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is very popular with taxi drivers. The lowest version of Camry Hybrid costs from 26,000 USD. The fact that the company stopped accepting orders therefore became a notable event.

“I want to reassure all Toyota customers that we are doing everything we can to increase supply to Australia, and deliver vehicles as soon as they are available,” said Toyota Austrlia vice president of sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, said.

Hanley also said that its global manufacturing team applies response measures to improve the supply situation of components affected by disruptions in the global supply chain, such as chip shortages.

In 2023, Toyota delivered 7,130 Camrys in Australia, with 6,490 of them being hybrid versions. This means the proportion of electrified versions in total Camry sales is up to 91%. The V6 engine version has been discontinued in 2021.

For customers in Australia, finding another car model to buy instead of the Camry Hybrid will be very difficult. Hyundai only sells the Sonata N Line version with a turbo engine and no hybrid version, while the Mazda6 also does not have an electrified engine option.

If you still want to buy a Toyota with a hybrid engine, customers can choose Corolla but in a smaller segment. The Hyundai i30 sedan will also have a hybrid option in 2024, but this product falls between the Corolla and Camry in terms of size.
